No DescriptionThe Rough Guide To Bollywood Legends: Asha Bhosle
It's impossible to chart Asha Bhosle's career in one disc, but Rough Guides makes a valiant effort. It captures Bhosle's evolving musical persona and her tendency to record wild and suggestive songs that her sister Lata Mangeshkar wouldn't touch. (The Tin Pan Alley jazz of "Ina Mina Dika" is a case in point.) The leap between eras at the outset -- from '40s jazz to disco in the space of two songs -- is jarring, but the release settles down after that; songs like "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" and "Mera Kuchh Saaman" show how gentle she could be. Bonus: Bhosle and her son Anand helped choose these songs.

After Disco Dancer, 1982's Star is Bollywood's best known disco film. (Yes, Bollywood made disco films. Didn't you know?) Kumar Gaurav stars as an aspiring singer fighting for fame in Bombay's clubs; suffice it to say, he ends up in a gold lamé jumpsuit and all's well. The soundtrack will wreck your head: check out "Koi Nahin," "Jaana" and "Boom Boom."
