Veränderte wirtschaftliche, soziale und politische Bedingungen forcierten die steigenden Anforderungen an das Leistungsvermögen der deutschen Landwirtschaft. Eine Befriedigung dieser war jedoch nur durch eine Steigerung der Ertragsintensität möglich, das heißt: auf einer relativ begrenzten landwirtschaftlichen Nutzfläche musste die erzeugte Produktmenge erhöht werden. Beleuchtet wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit die besondere Rolle der Landbauwissenschaften in diesem Prozess. Ein Themenkomplex der Agrarwissenschaften wird herausgegriffen, der wie kein anderer den Beginn einer neuen Ära in der klassischen Pflanzenproduktionswissenschaft kennzeichnet - die Agrikulturchemische Revolution. Sie stand zugleich für die Vernetzung der naturwissenschaftlichen Grundlagenfächer mit der praktischen Landwirtschaft, die so symptomatisch für diese Entwicklungsetappe war. An den Zeitpunkt der Entstehung einer eigenständigen Landbauwissenschaft knüpft sich seit den 60er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts eine andauernde Kontroverse der historischen Forschung. Nach Darstellung der Argumente wird der Zeitpunkt abwägend festgelegt und die einzelnen Etappen und wichtigsten Entwicklungen in der Genesis der Agrarwissenschaften skizziert. Mit den herausragenden Protagonisten der Agrikulturchemischen Revolution, Philipp Carl Sprengel und Justus von Liebig, beschäftigt sich der folgende Abschnitt. Von Interesse sind dabei ihre Werke, ihre Irrtümer und die Durchsetzung ihrer wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse. Anschließend gilt es, die Rolle der Agrikulturchemie für die Erhöhung der Agrarproduktion zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts zu untersuchen. Auf die als Kommunikationszentren zwischen Theorie und Praxis dienenden landwirtschaftlichen Versuchsstationen wird gesondert eingegangen - trugen sie doch maßgeblich zur Verbreitung und Etablierung des neuen Wissens bei. Folgende Fragen sollen die Untersuchung leiten: Warum setzten sich die Ergebnisse der agrikulturchemischen Forschung so spät durch?
