Synopsis: Handsome Vikram arrives from Bombay expecting to study at Berkley and become a yuppie. But his host family seems to have moved, hes not registered at the school and he has nowhere to stay. With his money and visa running out, it looks like hes out of luck. But things are not always what they seem - especially in the heyday of San Franciscos punk era. To his surprise, Vikram falls in love with the vibrant city and with Sue (Heidi Carpenter), a feisty bohemian artist working at a local movie theater. Dodging INS agents as they go, the couple resorts to desperate measures, including a hilarious bungled burglary and an impromptu curbside wedding. It all ends happily with a trip to India and a romantic dance number right out of a Bollywood musical. The son of an American painter and a Bombay filmmaker, director David Rathod grew up in India and learned his craft working with film greats Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. His first feature, WEST IS WEST is an irresistible romantic comedy starring Ashutosh Gowariker (director of the acclaimed Oscar nominated Lagaan ). The films soundtrack by the popular musicians Sheila Chandra and Jai Uttal is spectacular. One of the earliest films directed by a music video director (Rathod created videos for Huey Lewis & the News, The Bangles and Elvis Costello) and the first to merge American independent filmmaking with Bollywood style, WEST IS WEST is a landmark in cinema - and enormous fun to watch!
