Als die Tragikomödie 1774 anonym erschien, wurde sie begeistert von den Zeitgenossen aufgenommen und teilweise sogar für ein Werk Goethes gehalten. Stoff für die Erzählung lieferte Lenz eine Begebenheit auf einem livländischen Rittergut während seiner Hauslehrertätigkeit in Königsberg. Mit ""Der Hofmeister"", das über 150 Jahre später in einer Bearbeitung Brechts erschien, begann die Entwicklung des sozialkritischen Milieudramas und somit ist die Tragikömödie von großer literaturgeschichtlicher Bedeutung.
