She started with the illustrious raj kapoor in sapnoon ka saudagar ,the eternal dream yet her first hit was ANDAZ with shammi , but it was the magical bike ride with rajesh khanna that was to be blamed for the charismatic pairing striking gold as in PREM NAGAR, she made gold with dev anand in JOHNNY MERA NAAM , tere mere sapne,joshila and cupa rustam. dharmendra stole her heart and the public applause with RAJA JANI ,TUM HAsIN MAIN JAWAN ,NAYA DAUR ,DOST , and the emotional SHARAFAT ,along with charas, JUGNU ,dream girl,AZAD ,but it was sippys SEETA AUR GEETA ,LATAJIS FAVOURITE MOVIE , [REMADE AS CHALBAAZ ]that made her a house hold name in indian community worldover ,this was followed by numerous hits like dus numbri ,sanyasi with manoj ,dharmatma with feroz khan , bhai ho to aisa and dulhan with jetendra but her artistic clics are with gulzar who describes her as a directors dream and watch her play a blind dancer in KINARA . her pairing with SHASHI in the undermined clic jahan pyar mile flopped as did naac uthe sansar and abinetri, though trishul and do or do panch with him and amitab ,who played her brother in gehri chaal to start off with jetendra as the hero but they fell apart though the second venture kasauti was a hit ,re-united as lovers in satte pesate a delightful remake of seven wives for seven brothers ,then followed some awful movies of which only naseeb was a superhit as was kranti ,but hema gave some good artistic movies at this stage like basu chaterjees ratnadeep and balu mahendras ek nai paheli where the delicate issue of older woman romancing younger man is sensitively portrayed with kamla hasan , about the same time she made kudrat and dard with rajesh khanna both quality love stories with memorable music ,but her best was a guest role in krodhi as a prostitute ,about this time smita patil died and hema replaced her in most of the projects notably rihaee with naseerudddin shah , where she gave an outstanding performance ,as in jyoti with jetendra she had been linked with jetendra , sanjeev and shatru but her solo affair with dharam ended in a second marriage for the already married actor and by now she has two grownup daughters , so lets bygone be bygones. wharever the reasons for the sanjeev fiasco they have been kept discreet though there is a true love story lurking somewhere as the extremely talented actor died more of a heartbreak then heartattack , yet her longest reign at the box office as no .1,from 1970 to 1985 ,ended with sridevi finally getting the crown from her . she still had more then a few surprises in store as she struck back with anjaam ,ramkali and sharara with rajkumar and mithun da sharara was her first movie as producer based on wallaces second lady with tina and mithun playing a hot young couple and rajkumar opposite her the song by lata is memorably picturised as a waltz - shabnam ka ik katra he , dil asna hai was a directorial effort which bombed despite mithun and shahrukh and she retired for a few years with a brief appeatance in the clic hey ram and then struck gold with amitab in BAGBAN ,An UNFORGETTABLE MOVIE . THE SUBSEQUENT VEER ZARA AND BABUL disappointed ,as she now concentrates still on dancing i hope someone can give her a role to justify her talent and beauty as according to bachan she still looks 16 while he is 60, answer to the riddle is its your inner beauty that shines on your face as your eyes reflect your soul . but its not just beauty ,its character and then principles that define respect ,which she has in tons and her grace is only matched by waheeda though they are from a different generation ,yet she declined to work in rajkapoors satyem shivum sundaram as she didnt believe in baring her body to attract audiences . she did samrat and alibaba 40 chor with zeenat while she did an offbeat palkon ki chaon me and lekin with rajesh and gulzar as a well balanced act . her best for me is meera where she spiritually plays the saintly woman .
